The Hip CAR

Newsletter Story Image (4)

A CAR stands for a controlled articular rotation and it is an expression of a joint’s full range of motion in a movement. I love giving hip CARs to my patients because:

  • It teaches them how to dissociate their hips from the lumbopelvic complex
  • Improve motor control of the hip musculature
  • It’s easy to modify positions to stress specific tissue more significantly

The key to getting the most out of this movement is to restrict motion at nearby joints to ensure all the motion comes from the hip joint. You can see me utilizing a block on my back as a cue for the movement to keep all the motion coming from my hip.
